Tony Castañeda Latin Jazz Sextet $10

The Tony Castañeda Latin Jazz Sextet has been honoring and keeping alive the latin jazz tradition for over 10 years, playing the music of what some call the Golden Age of Latin Jazz. (1940's-1960's) Constantly searching for the obscure gems of that era, the band felt a responsibility to present these treasures to a new audience with new vigor and life! The Afro-Cuban Jazz arrangements of that period are outrageously timeless and remain on a par with any jazz music coming out today.

On "Mambo O' Muerte", the bands second recording, the Tony Castañeda Latin Jazz Sextet pays tribute to the Latin jazz greats with all new, original compositions borne out of many years of listening, playing, and most importantly, respecting the genre known as Latin Jazz. Homage to the late Mongo Santamaria and one of the last remaining greats, Eddie Palmieri are paid in the tunes "Mr. Mongo" and "For E.P." written by the saxophonist Anders Svanoe. Pianist Dave Stoler contributes the moody "Cheech's Bossa" which I predict will become a classic, perhaps to be emulated 30 years down the road by the future aspirants to the Latin Jazz idiom. who knows what the future holds for Latin Jazz? This recording is not only a walk in the past but a trip to that future and a statement of what is now. "Mambo O' Muerte" gives you a choice: Dance or Die, Life or Death!!! The Tony Castañeda Latin Jazz Sextet has chosen to Live! What will you choose?
